Craft Market

August 12th, 2007

The Lifestyle Craft Market at South Bank is packed with a huge selection of arts, crafts, clothing, homewares, imports, snacks etc.

Craft market

Now I’m not one for browsing around – I hate shopping! And I’ve got good reason for that – I’m a bloke! That’s my excuse.

However, rather than walk around the market – I decided to walk straight through the thick of it and risk being caught in the feminine feeding frenzy that always seems to envelope these markets.

Well, I almost succeeded!

I avoided the shirts with some rather interesting (and probably politically incorrect sexist!) slogans, wicked witch dolls screaming at the patrons as they passed by only to get stuck at the exit with a lady selling puzzles!

Peter’s Puzzles and Games had all the classics from chess, drafts, twisted metal bits to the more recent Rubik Cube.

The first puzzle I tackled was the “Star of Wisdom“.

Star of Wisdom

Now this is a seemingly easy exercise of interlocking the loop and star. Well, putting it together is quite easy – it’s the taking apart that takes some patience and nimble fingers!

After that frustration, I tried my hand at the “Wisdom Antlers“.

Wisdom Antlers

For the Wisdom Antlers, separate the ring from the chained horse shoes. A couple minutes later and confidence restored, it was the turn of a “wooden diamond“.

Too easy – and really not worth the AU$20! Then came the “Domino Cube“. The puzzle is made up of 9 wooden pieces. There are 3 cubes you can make with this puzzle.

The aim is to let only one color – red, green or none be visible. All nine pieces are “L-shaped” and each with a slightly different color arrangement. The really neat thing about this 3D game is it’s quite easy to do, which makes it perfect for kids and adults alike. Just put two of the pieces together to form a rectangle, similar in size to a domino and stack it in the box. The catch lies in the odd number of pieces.

And finally I tackled the “Ring Puzzle”.

Ring Puzzle

In this puzzle there are four rings that are looped together – much like a chain. The mission is to take this chained arrangement and twist them over so that they cross each other. I think this is similar to the way in which women plat their hair? I don’t have hair so this is just a guess!

Next week I hope to find at the Lifestyle Craft Market stall the Chinese Ring Puzzle.
