I’m an electronics engineer (Bsc Msc) who left Cape Town, South Africa which now finds himself down under in Brisbane, Australia.
When your far away and you need to phone home, I can definitely recommend Google Talk. All you need is a Gmail account.
Somehow, I don’t know why but it seems to work better than Skype – maybe cause less people are using it? I find Skype works better when connecting to Dublin, Ireland but Google Talk gives better quality to South Africa.
On the side: Vodafone call from Brisbane to a South African Telkom land line on over a weekend costs around AU$10 for a 20 minute call.
