Internet in Australia is a tad expensive, but a hell of lot better than South Africa. Back in SA, you'd be lucky if your ADSL line averaged a 100k and for 1GB you pay US$30. At least in Australia the internet might be expensive but at least you've got some bandwidth that really works.

I went off Rebif in late December and haven't had any relapses. Initially I was told with Rebif I might get a headache and flu symptoms - what lies! I'm sticking to dietary changes which really help. I've found my triggers in coke cola and dairy products. Still some tingling in my legs but all seems better. I have hope in finding the recovery without drugs.

I'm not on any treatment of that kind for my MS, yet. I'm on a very low dose of amitriptyline which is just attempting to stop things being up and down on a daily basis (it really works, though). I've so far not had any symptoms bad enough to make me consider disease modifying drugs yet. And I'm hoping it stays that way for a loooong time.

Sorry for not replying to your comment before, I hadn't realised you'd replied to mine (d'oh). I read your blog within Google Reader which kinda hides comments from me...

Hi,

I'll tell you what I think. I think that the cost of broadband in Australia is worryingly high. Those prices are scary. $200 a month for 30GB of data? Ouch.

But it's probably not worth moving half way around the world just to get cheaper internet connectivity. And you'd have to put up with crap weather, so maybe it all evens out... ;)

G'Day Elsabe,

Trying to secure a job over the internet is a waste of time because you're a migrant with no LOCAL experience or LOCAL REFERENCES. As an engineer with a masters degree I thought I'd just walk into a job - no such luck.

Employers here in Australia want to be able to see and touch the candidate or have the ability to ask some local previous employer about you. They also want to throw some skills tests at you - something which isn't always practical over the internet.

Bottom line is this. Companies here in Australia are very fair - they'll take anybody who proves that they can do the job. It helps to be down under!

As for your husband skills, I know that as a developer myself, C# is in demand and Sharepoint is starting to appear on the wanted skills lists. Chuck the CV out the window and write a well formed RESUME. A couple differences that sometimes aggravate employment agencies. Always send a resume in an editable format - never PDF or some other strange format. Be short and sweet to the point.

Hope this helps!

Hi Bushy,

How are you today?

Why is it so difficult to get a job over the internet? The jobs get advertised, and we apply, but no response. My husband is a software developer, no degree but long years experience. Will it be better to hop on a plane, go over and go for interviews then? Hubby's brother is living in Oz and is very happy, says he'll never come back to SA. We also want to live and work in Australia.

He is a specialist in Workflow, C#, Sharepoint, BizTalk, K2Blackpearl, .Net, VB.net

Please HELP !!
Have a good day
Regards
Elsabe

Thanks mkns!
I started with rebif injections 3x week treatment and this really sucks - especially the headache side effect. Thinking of focussing on diet changes. What treatment are you on?

It's a bugger going through all that. I went through that and more - it took over 2 years (potentially 5) to get to a diagnosis. It was clear to most that I had MS and it took 2 years to get the official diagnosis, but for the preceeding 3 I had other symptoms that now, looking back, were MS related too, but too vague to tell. So glad you got there quicker than me. Unless, of course, your story was seriously condensed!

I had the brain MRI with the injections, but they burst my vein when doing it and told me this while I was still in the MRI machine so I couldn't move to see what was going on. Panic attack, really pretty bad stuff. Still, survivable.

From one software engineer to another, albeit on the other side of the world, I know what you're going through, mate. Hang in there, you're not alone.

Did you eventually get a diagnosis? I assume so, based on the subject of the post, but you left it hanging... ;)
